Lucas Leiva has been named Liverpool FC player of the season for 2010/2011
When Lucas first joined Liverpool in 2007 from Gremio for a fee of £6million he found it hard to break into the Liverpool line up with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso, Mascerano leading central midfield. Manager Rafael Benitez was pleased with his signing and said he is looking forward to seeing Lucas play for Liverpool and score goals.
His debut was against Portsmouth he came on for Mohammed Sissoko in the second half. He also won a penalty in his first Liverpool derby game against Everton when he took a shot bottom right corner and the Everton captain handballed it on the line and was sent off!. Then Liverpool sold Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid and the year after Mascerano went to Barcelona which means Liverpool were desperate for central midfielders. So Liverpool signed Alberto Aquilani from Roma at the time he was recovering with a broken ankle so he couldn’t be named in the Liverpool lineup.
Lucas was playing week in week out partnering along side Jay Spearing who had just broke into the Liverpool side Lucas took a lot of criticism from the paper and the Liverpool fans but then he improved and he was Liverpool’s most talked about player for a long period of time.
Lucas made 32 appearances in the 2010/2011 premiere league season. And has been named player of the month and now he finished his season off under Kenny Dalglish who has made a big impact to the club and the players and he plays Lucas every week and thinks he will get better and better each week he plays for Liverpool.
Now the Liverpool fans see Lucas as a top class Brazilian footballer. In the absence of the Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard Lucas has grown into a first team regular and the heart of Liverpool’s midfield. He has also been recognized as Liverpool’s most consistency player of the season.
He told the Liverpool FC website his dream this is what he said `` I'm very excited to have a first son. We are happy with the way everything is done in Liverpool. I was a bit scared at the beginning because the culture is different but now we are really happy. I am a little anxious because when you have a baby there is a lot of responsibility. You have to do everything for the baby but we've planned it and we're ready. And of course our family is around to help us because we don't have too much experience. We will learn a lot.
When Liverpool played Tottenham last home game of the season I was there because I am a Liverpool fan and he took baby Pedro Lucas and walked him around anfield with the other players and wives and children such and exciting moment for Lucas Leiva.
